Washington: The United States has unveiled a $2.5 billion security assistance package for Ukraine, aiming to bolster Kyiv's defenses before President-elect Donald Trump assumes office next month.
President Joe Biden, in a statement on Monday, expressed his commitment to supporting Ukraine amidst ongoing Russian aggression. "Today, I am proud to announce nearly $2.5 billion in security assistance for Ukraine, as the Ukrainian people continue to defend their independence and freedom from Russian aggression," Biden stated.
The package consists of two key components. First, a $1.25 billion military "drawdown package" will enable the Pentagon to expedite delivery of critical weaponry by utilizing existing U.S. stockpiles. This includes drones, High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) ammunition, anti-tank weapons, air-to-ground munitions, and spare parts.
Second, $1.22 billion will be allocated through the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative, allowing for procurement of military equipment directly from defense contractors or partner nations.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken highlighted the international solidarity behind this effort, stating, "The United States and more than 50 nations stand united to ensure Ukraine has the capabilities it needs to defend itself against Russia's aggression."
This announcement follows an earlier commitment of nearly $1 billion in drones, ammunition, and equipment earlier this month. The Biden administration is racing against time to deliver as much aid as possible before Trump, who has expressed skepticism about U.S. assistance to Ukraine, is inaugurated in January. Trump has also claimed he could negotiate a ceasefire within hours of taking office.
The package underscores the outgoing administration's resolve to strengthen Ukraine's defenses during a critical period in the conflict.
